I’ve been business online for quite a few years now and have tried many types of advertising online. I’ve lost my shirt and a bundle of money using Google Adwords and other PPC services. There’s one little known paid advertising service I’ve used with amazing results … and without going broke. I submitted several campaigns to StumbleUpon Ads and the results are nothing short of fantastic. Of course, your results will depend on the type of content you submit to SU.
How to Use StumbleUpon to Advertise
If you don’t know what StumbleUpon is, check out this demo. StumbleUpon gives users a way to quickly “channel surf” the web and find sites they might not have normally visited. With their advertising program, you can pay $0.05 cents a visitor to deliver your page to targeted visitors.
How Can I Target My Stumbleupon Campaign?
In addition to StumbleUpon’s built-in behavioural targeting, you can target campaigns by:
- Category - more than 500 to choose from.
- Location - country, state, city (US & Canada)
- Demographics - age, gender
What kind of content works well with StumbleUpon?
Entertaining, artistic, and informative content works best. In my experience, business articles do not do very well unless you do something creative with them. Some of the articles I’ve submitted that have gone viral and gotten thousands of visitors in a short period of time have been photos, creativity tests, and humor. So if you are thinking of writing an advertisement post and running a Stumbleupon campaign, you will probably be sorely disappointed. Stumbleupon visitors are just as quick to give a Thumbs Down as they are a Thumbs Up.
The more popular your site, video, photo, etc, the more people will see it. Using the StumbleUpon toolbar, members rate content “thumbs-up” (really like it) or “thumbs-down” (not for them). The more people who vote “thumbs-up”, the more quickly it will spread. If a visitor gives your page or site a thumbs up, it will be shown on their homepage and it’s likely their friends on the site will see your page too.
Here are two pages from this site that have gone viral through Stumbleupon
Having users give your content a thumbs up can translate into thousands of additional visitors. With a small budget of just $10 per day and carefully choosing the articles that I run a Stumbleupon Ad Campaign for, I’ve gotten great results on a “beer” budget.

Are you getting a thumbs up for sure or just a targeted visitor , there are some sites that gives you a sure thumbs up for your content , But as you said without proper content it will most likely get thumbs down

Thanks for the tip. StumbleUpon traffic has a high bounce rate, so it’s less useful for business in general. But I’d love to read what kind of results you got, ie. did it increase your subscribers? If it can do that, then I’d say it could be good value for money.

I like SU campaigns too. I have had some good success with them too. Mostly it is playing with the demographic settings to get the best results like you mentioned. Shotgun method doesn’t work too well.

For kicks I tried SU and while I got tons of traffic, it seems like most people only stayed for a few seconds and left.

Wow. I have been trying to find a deal like this and I may give this a try. I did not know that SU had paid advertising. Well you learn something new everyday.

I’ve got a lot of traffic from SU - but I must say that it’s not the type of traffic that buys or clicks very often. But that being said - it’s still nice to get traffic and it can lead to other things.
I also have tried the ads that you are talking about - I have failed with. But that’s because exactly like you state - SU users are looking for interesting things, not businessy things.

I’ll have to investigate doing a paid SU campaign. I’ve gotten great results by just having friends help out here and there. But, as other people have mentioned, SU users aren’t typically the type who are ready & willing to buy.

Great stuff! Only now I understand what Stumble Upon can do. But I need to understand more over those thumbs up and thumb downs. I tried registering before but it required a specific browser which was M.FF but I am using Safari now although I have a firefox too. I think i need to read more and learn again and try this stumble upon…
